Mechanics of the World-Wide Web

It is important to understand the vocabulary and principles of the World-Wide Web.

Client-Server model

The World-Wide Web is based on the Client-Server model. This allows the issues of creating a document and viewing a document to be considered separately.

Open Protocol

Since the World-Wide Web is based on open protocols, it is unwise to make any assumptions about what is running on the other end of the network connection. It might be a different Operating System, a different CPU, a different piece of software, etc. Everything must be implemented in terms of the defined protocol.
