The Gopher Server

This is a piece of software which services Gopher requests that come across the network.

The online dictionary of computing says this about Gopher:

A popular distributed document retrieval system which started as a Campus Wide Informatio System at the University of Minnesota. Many hosts on the Internet now run Gopher servers which proved a menu of document. A document may be a plain text file, sound, image, submenu or other Gopher object type...

The Gopher Protocol is defined in RFC 1436. Note that the Gopher system does not have many of the features that the native WWW protocol has.

There is a Frequently Asked Questions file for the comp.infosystems.gopher newsgroup
