The way the dojang is constructed with the flag wall, Dojang Hun, pictures and other articles in the school help create a certain atmosphere in the school. The actions and behavior of the students also affect this atmosphere. This atmosphere reflects the philosophical theme of Tukong Moosul. A calm spirit must always be present in the dojang. The weapons, sparring gear, bags, mats, and other equipment set the stage for the physical part of the training. All of these elements together serve to help the student learn to use his heart and mind, as well as his body, while training. These lessons are then taken to the world outside the dojang.
When you enter the dojang, you always bow. This shows respect and humility. Respect is for the thousands of years of knowledge and wisdom represented by the dojang. Your humility shows that you are open to new knowledge.
A dojang cannot be bought prefabricated and ready to train in. The students' hearts and souls are invested in the dojang by the work they put into training and in taking care of the dojang. And, like any other investment, the return is greater than the initial investment.
The dojang is your place to train, learn, and grow. It represents the struggles in life. Spas cater to the ego, whereas the dojang trains the body, mind and soul. Strength of character is built in the dojang which stays with you forever. As James Herndon says, "A dojo, however, is above all, a place of enlightenment. Enlightenment is a journey which takes place in the mind; and the mind cannot be fooled with frills. The most direct route to self realization is through self confrontation. A dojo, a traditional dojo, is a place where the journey is played out. The elements of a traditional dojo remind us constantly of the journey." ["The Elements of a Traditional Dojo" by Shihan James Herndon, Ph. D.; Inside Karate; October, 1988, pp, 66-68.]
To me, the dojang is a place where qualities such as love, empathy, honor, loyalty and
compassion reside. The energy of the students remains long after the students have left.
The dojang is built and cared for by the students for a reason; to help build a brotherhood of martial artists who are helping each other on their path of enlightenment.
