The IBM Work in Japan

Most of us ended up working about 12 hours a day, 7 days a week while we where there. The building that we were in was within walking distance of the hotel (about 10 minutes). It was almost directly across from the "Central Square" where they awarded the gold medals. It was also thankfully close to a Kentucky Fried Chicken/Pizza Hut.

The whole team went over to the pavillion where the gold medals were awarded (for outdoor events) and had a couple of pictures taken.

We had two rooms in this building. There were lots of people in both rooms and no air conditioning. We left the windows open alot but, occasionally, the police would make us close them because the emperor was traveling down the street. I had very little reason to wear any warm clothes because of this. This was the "Systems room". The machine labeled www.nagano.olympic.org isn't really the web-server though. The real servers were put in four strategic locations around the world.

Another reason to leave the windows open was this incredible view.

After a couple of weeks of this non-stop work, we had an official planning meeting at the local bar. This just happened to coincide with the Superbowl game. We talked the local bar owner (an American style bar) into piping in the game and opening at 8AM on Monday morning.
